Sapa in 3 Days: A Relaxed Itinerary

Sapa is a hill town in the far north of Vietnam, known for terraced rice fields, mountain views and villages of the Hmong, Dao and other ethnic groups. Three days is enough to see the highlights without rushing.

Getting there

From Hanoi, Sapa is roughly five to six hours by road. Most visitors travel by private car or van, which is the most comfortable choice for families and groups. Sleeper buses and trains to Lao Cai followed by a transfer are also popular. We can arrange transport and pick-ups for you.

Day 1: Arrive and walk to Cat Cat Village

Arrive in Sapa by late morning and check in. After lunch, walk down to Cat Cat Village, a short and easy walk from the town centre. You will pass stalls, small waterfalls and traditional houses. Return in the late afternoon and enjoy a warm dinner in town, since evenings can be cool even outside winter.

Day 2: Trek through the valley

This is the day most guests remember. With a local guide, follow a trail through Y Linh Ho, Lao Chai and Ta Van, with views across the terraced fields of the Muong Hoa Valley. The walk takes most of the day at a gentle pace, with a lunch stop in a village. Wear shoes with good grip, as paths can be muddy after rain. Shorter routes are available for children and older travellers.

Day 3: Fansipan or Ham Rong, then return

Fansipan is the highest peak in Indochina. A cable car and a short climb take you close to the top, but views depend on the weather, as mist is common. If it is cloudy, Ham Rong Mountain, with its gardens and viewpoints over the town, is a good alternative. After lunch, return to Hanoi.

Tips for planning

Check the season before you book: terraces are golden around September and October and green from late spring. Bring a light rain jacket and layers, since temperatures change quickly. Tell us about halal needs, mobility, and children when you enquire, and we will adjust the pace. Message us on WhatsApp and we will prepare a plan for your dates.
