Northern Vietnam is popular with Malaysian travellers who want mountains, bay scenery and good food a few hours' flight from home. With a little preparation, halal needs are easy to manage.
Flights and timing
Direct flights connect Kuala Lumpur and Hanoi in roughly three and a half to four hours, and Vietnam is one hour behind Malaysia. Check the latest visa and entry rules for Malaysian passport holders before you travel, as they can change. The cooler months, from October to April, are generally more comfortable for sightseeing, while Sapa's terraces are golden around September and October.
Eating halal in Hanoi
Pork is common in Vietnamese cooking, so we recommend choosing restaurants that clearly serve halal food. There are a few good options in Hanoi, including places serving Malaysian and Singaporean dishes, Indonesian cuisine, halal Vietnamese food and Indian food. See our guide to halal restaurants in Hanoi for names and addresses. We confirm opening hours and halal status before each trip and book your dinners in advance.
Eating halal on tour
Outside Hanoi, halal restaurants are rare. On day trips and in Sapa, we plan simple halal-friendly meals such as fish, seafood, eggs, vegetables, rice and fruit. On Ha Long Bay cruises, the lunch on board is not halal-certified, so we prepare fish and vegetarian choices. Please tell us your requirements when you enquire, as we cannot guarantee options at the last minute.
Prayer
Al Noor Mosque in the Old Quarter is the main place of worship in central Hanoi. Elsewhere, we build short stops into the itinerary and use hotel rooms or a quiet corner for prayer. Tell us your preferences and prayer times, and we will plan the day around them.
Suggested itineraries
For four to five days, combine Hanoi with a Ha Long Bay overnight cruise or with Ninh Binh. For a week, add Sapa for trekking and mountain views. Families with young children or older relatives often prefer a private tour with a slower pace and fewer hotel changes.
What to bring
Light layers, comfortable walking shoes, a rain jacket, sun protection and any medication you need. A prayer mat and a compass app are useful on the road. Ask your hotel to confirm halal needs, such as food allergy information, when they prepare your meals.
Plan your trip
Tell us your travel dates, group size and requirements on WhatsApp, and we will send an itinerary and price. We have organised trips for Muslim families and groups from Malaysia, Singapore and the Philippines.
